The Linux adventure continues — 3 Comments

  1. Since I started my new job last week I was given an absolutely top notch laptop and two monitors. Because most of the work I will be doing is on Linux I have it running Ubuntu 10.04.
While I’ve been using Linux for over 12 years now I never considered it a worthy desktop operating system. There was, (and still is to some degree) something that would always crop up and annoy the life out of me.
I have to say though, it’s come a long way from the days where you could quite literally destroy your monitor if you didn’t know what you were doing.
It’s not quite there yet but for the moment I have no need nor want to switch back. The usability has leaped ahead.

  2. My first experiences with Linux were back in the mid 90s when it was still relatively new.  That was the time when virtually any programme you wanted to install had to be compiled in using command lines.  It was a nightmare for the casual user.

It has come a long way since then, and most people would be quite at ease with Linux now.  It’s only when you start tinkering under the bonnet that it becomes geeky again.  This Mint installation was virtually flawless in that it detected all the hardware including screen resolution, wireless adapter and hard disks, so it was simply a matter of configuring the IP address and I was away.

The only reason really that I’m breaking it is that I have too much time on my hands!  😉
